Winter Hats, Summer Knits

It’s been very hot in Michigan lately. Even at the lake, temperatures reached into the 90’s. This is perfect weather for small projects. 60 Quick Knits is a great new book that features all Cascade 220 yarns. 20 hats, 20 scarves, and 20 mittens. This one is Bobbles and Cables designed by Suvi Simola. A fun, quick knit, worked up in Cascade 220 wool.

Starfish Hat, by Anne Farnham, worked up quite nicely. I moved the needle size up one beyond gauge, to get a bit more slouch in the main section. The bit of lace and bobble mix is easy peasy and adds a nice touch. And at the crown, the decreases form a starfish shape. This electric green will brighten up a wintry day. Cascade 220 wool has such a wonderful selection of colors.

This one, knit in Cascade Quatro, is “Tasseled Topper” by Linda Medina. That must make mine: No-Tasseled Topper” and I think it works nicely.  Not a fan of tassels, but I like this hat.

Cascade’s new book is great for knitters looking for small projects in worsted weight yarns. In the last few weeks, I’ve knit these three hats and have already started my second scarf from the book.

  1. Hats are always my go-to project for the summer. They don’t sit in your lap so they’re bearable when it’s hot. I quite like the second hat. It’s not the usual hat with bobbles.

  2. @Andi…you are so right about hats being a great summer project. No heavyweight afghans when it’s 90 degrees out! The new Cascade Book:” 60 Quick Knits, 20 Hats, 20 Scarfs, 20 Mittens in Cascade 220″ has some great patterns, including the unusual bobble hat. I picked the book up at Knitpicks during their last 40% off books sale. What a deal!

  3. Greetings
I too love this book but am really struggling with the decreases as well
They seem to go out of sequence with the existing pattern and I have checked all my stitches so they are all correct thanks to stitch markers
So have done 3 sets of very small bobbles – I can live with that error in the pattern
Did you find any problems with the first decrease row?
    Thanks Chris

  4. @Christine…I knit the hat quite some time ago but don’t have any notes about errors on the decrease section. I filtered the 100 or so projects on Ravelry for the “helpful” ones and no one is mentioning problems on the decrease rows. Sorry I can’t be of more help. This book does have a lot of errata, see http://www.sixthandspring.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=15 But there’s nothing listed for the Bobbles and Cables hat. The designer has published this correction on the Ravelry pattern page: Errata: There’s an error in bobble instructions. The bobble should be made as follows: Make bobble: K1, p1 twice in same st, making 4 sts from one; slip these stitches back to left hand needle and knit them again; then pass the 3rd, 2nd and first sts over the last st made.
